Death in the Forest is a crime novel with an historical background. It is set in England in the years following the Norman conquest. To make his New Forest a hunting preserve, William the Conqueror destroyed churches and villages, and it was believed that in revenge the forest would prove fatal to his sons. This is the story of their deaths - and of what lay behind them. The story's heroine is Edith, a princess of Scotland and descendant of the Saxon kings of England. She lives in a nunnery at Romsey, between the forest and Winchester, the ancient capital of Wessex. Yearning to rescue England from the Normans, she is far from reconciled to spending her life immured as a nun. But although sent to Romsey to be secluded from the world, Edith is not sheltered from intrigue and violent death - or even from the opportunity of becoming queen. On her very first day four lords come to view her beauty and one of them is murdered. Who is the murderer? And what will be the effect on the succession to England and Normandy? Edith is determined to find out. The famous figures of the 11th century are portrayed here. Edith, known to history as the Rose of Romsey, meets all the Conqueror's quarrelsome sons, his diminutive but formidable queen and even the awesome Conqueror himself. She visits Edward the Confessor's widow and is herself visited by Archbishop Anselm, companion of popes and scourge of kings. The abbess, who is her aunt, and Father Edmund, her confessor, form part of the intrigue which Edith seeks to unravel. 'To Those who Appreciate Wistaria and Sunshine. Small medieval castle on the shores of the Mediterranean to be let For the month of April, above a bay on the Italian Riviera.' Four very different women-the dishevelled and downtrodden Mrs Wilkins, the sad, sweet-faced Mrs Arbuthnot, the formidable widow Mrs Fisher, and the ravishing socialite Lady Caroline Dester-are drawn to the shores of the Mediterranean that April. As each, in turn, blossoms in the warmth of the Italian spring and finds their spirits stirring, quite unexpected changes occur. The Enchanted April (1922) is a deceptive and timely novel immured in a post-war context, a period noted for its wistful and sometimes satiric writings. Von Arnim's novel is part of this oeuvre and portrays an escape to a carefully described pastoral enclave away from encroaching urbanisation and the spread of new technologies, in an era when the Great War had left many emotionally and physically starved. The journey to San Salvatore by four unhappy women is an escape from stifling parochialism, constraining social and gendered expectations as well as stultifying insularity, but the evocation of an extraordinarily aesthetic and 'enchanted' location suggests more than personal recuperation. The Body in the Stress Test of ArtThe Chinese artist He Yunchang (b. Kunming, 1967; lives and works in Beijing), who graduated from the Central Yunnan Art Institute in 1991, has made a name for himself over the past two decades with a series of extraordinary performances. He had himself immured in a concrete cast and stayed inside it for 24 hours; tried to divide a river into two halves with his own blood while suspended from a crane; burnt his attire off his body; paused halfway down the Niagara Falls; or had a costal arch removed. In all these works, his body figured as the central medium of his creative practice; no means of expression seems too challenging for him. What may appear at first glance like stunts and tests of courage soon reveal themselves to be profoundly analytical and richly referential works of art that intertwine existential thinking with traditional Chinese mythology, legends, and ancient philosophy, while also gesturing toward the art of the Austrian Actionists like Günter Brus or the duo Ulay und Marina Abramovic's spectacular pieces.Curated by Ai Weiwei, the exhibition at the Francisco Carolinum, Linz, isHe Yunchang's first comprehensive retrospective in the German-speaking countries and accompanied by an extensive catalogue with essays by Ai Weiwei, Freda Fiala, Nataline Colonnello, Wang Fen, He Yunchang, and Alfred Weidinger that embed his practice in the tradition of body-centered action and performance art.

What 9/11 Family Members and Others Have Said about "Lament and Restoration" 'I have a hard time with certain music because it brings a lot of tears, but this was wonderful. I can hear (Ron Wasserman's) message of shock, anger, sadness, questioning and acceptance through (Alison's) playing.' Robert J. Fialko, father of 29 year old 9/11 victim Jennifer Louise. 'It was very spiritual and helped me in the long-term healing process, I was coming for Paul (cousin who died in the attacks). He would have appreciated this, too.' Lisa Beatini. "'Lament and Restoration' seems to be an exceptionally clear and accurate tone poem. I hear elements of reverie, happy memories, shock, stress, horror, confused unfocused desperation, indecision, calm, hope, somewhat uncertain initiation of action, and movement toward resolution. These various elements wax and wane, dominate and fade, in a somewhat random fashion. ...this must be a very accurate depiction of the emotional state and tangible actions of people who have experienced the horror that the Crowthers have experienced. Apart from being amazingly 'graphic,' 'Lament and Restoration' is also solid and beautiful music that is a pleasure to listen to." Mac MacDonald, webmaster, september11quilts.org Performed by the GraceMusic Chamber Orchestra and conducted by former New York City Ballet Music Director, Andrea Quinn, the violin concerto was composed to embody the struggle of Alison Crowther to cope with her grief for the loss of her son through the resumption of her violin playing after a 20-year hiatus. 24-year old Welles, known worldwide as "The Man in the Red Bandanna," heroically rescued countless people before his own death in the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Alison is the featured solo violinist on the recording. Paolo Michele Bordignon, the brilliant young harpsichordist, is also a featured soloist on the second piece on the disk, "Suite of Historical Dances." The orchestra is composed of members of the New York Philharmonic, New York City Ballet Orchestra, New York City Opera, American Ballet Theater, and other noted players. From the liner notes: "Lament and Restoration," subtitled "Concerto in one movement for Alison, Strings, and Harpsichord," is almost inseparable from both the person and institution to which it is dedicated, Alison Crowther and the Welles Crowther Trust. It tells the story of how one mother used the power of music to help overcome the grief she experienced after losing her son in the World Trade Center attacks on September 11, 2001. Rather than compose a requiem for the memory of the dead, Ron Wasserman searched for subject matter that would celebrate life and looking to the future in the midst of profound tragedy. In the wonderful story of how Alison put on a series of concerts in her local church, Ron found just that. The emotional needs of the piece are well served by it's moderate tempo, Baroque instrumentation, and pleasing tonality. In concert, Alison begins with spoken commentary about the loss of her son and her feelings about how the music speaks of five emotions "shock, anger, sadness, questioning, and acceptance." During the performance, as listeners both hear and see this mother play the concerto starting in desolation and moving toward healing, the audience has a reaction to more than just the music, but also to the themes of death, loss, and life that resonate with everyone. The "Suite of Historical Dances," is based on the four Bach orchestral suites, and remains faithful to their form and harmonic language almost to the end. A formal French Overture starts the piece, however, instead of a Minuet, Gavotte and Sarabande, I've updated the form with slightly more contemporary dances: Polka, Tango, Jitterbug, and Moon Walk.
