Combustion Technologies for a Clean Environment (eBook, PDF)
Selected Papers from the Proceedings of the First International Conference Vilamoura, Portugal, September 3-6, 1991. The 54 papers in this volume establish the first in a series of biannual benchmarks for technologies that maximize energy conversion while minimizing undesirable emissions. Covering the entire range of industrial and transport combustion as well as strategies for energy R&D, these contributions will be useful to mechanical and chemical engineers in academia and industry, and technical personnel in military, energy and environmental agencies of government. Among topics covered in the book are: strategies: now and in the future; pulverised coal combustion; oil combustion; gas combustion; gas fired systems, biomass combustion; fluidized bed combustion; incinerators; internal combustion; engines and reaction kinetics.- Shop: buecher

Solidification and Stabilization Disposal of Incineration Ash
Solidification / Stabilization (S/S) is a revisited technology that gives a new dimension in treatment and reuse of hazardous waste. S/S technology has been used to immobilize heavy metals, as well as, soils and sludge contaminated with heavy metals. The technology provides several advantages including waste handling and final disposal of the solid matrix. This book covers niche area within S/S technology to explore the S/S process of incineration ash from several types of incinerators. Discussion on ash samples from clinical waste incinerator, mixed hazardous waste incinerator, bottom ash of a municipal solid waste incinerator and ash from coal fired power plant is included. This book explores in detail the vast amount of published work in S/S and it's relevance in treating incineration ash. Unlike sludge, incineration ash contains extremely high level of heavy metals which need to be contained for safe disposal with minimal environmental impact. This book describes all options available for such disposal. The contents would be extremely useful to industrialists, waste managers, researchers and postgraduate students.- Shop: buecher

Coal, Cages, Crisis (eBook, PDF)
How prisons became economic development strategies for rural Appalachian communitiesAs the United States began the project of mass incarceration, rural communities turned to building prisons as a strategy for economic development. More than 350 prisons have been built in the U.S. since 1980, with certain regions of the country accounting for large shares of this dramatic growth. Central Appalachia is one such region; there are eight prisons alone in Eastern Kentucky. If Kentucky were its own country, it would have the seventh highest incarceration rate in the world. In Coal, Cages, Crisis, Judah Schept takes a closer look at this stunning phenomenon, providing insight into prison growth, jail expansion and rising incarceration rates in America's hinterlands. Drawing on interviews, site visits, and archival research, Schept traces recent prison growth in the region to the rapid decline of its coal industry. He takes us inside this startling transformation occurring in the coalfields, where prisons are often built on top of old coalmines, including mountaintop removal sites, and built into community planning approaches to crises of unemployment, population loss, and declining revenues. By linking prison growth to other sites in this landscape-coal mines, coal waste, landfills, and incinerators-Schept shows that the prison boom has less to do with crime and punishment and much more with the overall extraction, depletion, and waste disposal processes that characterize dominant development strategies for the region.Schept argues that the future of this area now hangs in the balance, detailing recent efforts to oppose its carceral growth. Coal, Cages, Crisis offers invaluable insight into the complex dynamics of mass incarceration that continue to shape Appalachia and the broader United States.- Shop: buecher
