Effects of Unfairly Unfavorable Book Reviews on Independent Authors: When a Negative Review is Not Merited by a Written Work , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 49min
On a particular popular social media reviews site, where reviewers are allowed to classify books in their shelving options under terms such as “d**k head literature”, comments toward this very book, included my being told to “castrate” myself, my being called “an a**hole” and being told to “die in a dark hole”. I am only citing scant-examples and these type comments are far more reaching in the negative and offensive directions than I can even begin to convey (Hence: “Unfairly Unfavorable”). Important: Most book reviewers are good, honest people. Just because a reviewer is harsh, this does not make them a bad or dishonest reviewer. I do believe however, that there are stark differences between harsh reviews and attack reviews or those that are directed at authors personally. I believe it is wrong for authors to attack reviewers as well. Authors should see no need in replying to reviews or reviewers, unless there is a legitimate reason to do so (very rare - usually only to point out a major mistaken perception within a book). I also do not believe authors should reply to reviewers with “thank yous”, unless under special circumstances because this would mean that honest, critical reviews should also deserve a “thank you” and a bias toward positive reviews would be evident and unnecessary (readers already know that authors prefer positive reviews). As should be noted by the title of this audioook, I mainly address and discuss “unfairly unfavorable” book reviews that are posted against independent (indie) author's books and eBooks and not those that are earned and deserved by them (negative reviews are merited in most cases, while some are 'undeserved'). Some of the content in this audiobook, I have derived from posts I made on a publisher's forum, which I have rewritten and edited into headings for it. The fact that undeserved negative reviews are posted online by readers on bookseller websites, is evident by the fact that same books at the same time, ungekürzt. Language: English. The Picture of Dorian Gray , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 565min
The Picture of Dorian Gray is a philosophical novel by Oscar Wilde, first published complete in the July 1890 issue of Lippincott's Monthly Magazine. The magazine's editor feared the story was indecent, and without Wilde's knowledge, deleted roughly 500 words before publication. Despite that censorship, The Picture of Dorian Gray offended the moral sensibilities of British book reviewers, some of whom said that Oscar Wilde merited prosecution for violating the laws guarding the public morality. In response, Wilde aggressively defended his novel and art in correspondence with the British press, although he personally made excisions of some of the most controversial material when revising and lengthening the story for book publication the following year. ungekürzt. The Shadow Soldier: The Matt Branson Story , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 590min
Matt Branson went to West Point Military Academy and just knew he would be a cavalry officer after he graduated. The Army had other ideas about his military future. Matt was given the opportunity to serve his country in the Military Information Division. His decision to forego his dreams of being a cavalry officer led him to a life in the shadows. He went to Buffalo, Wyoming, to evaluate the Johnson County War to determine if federal intervention was merited; Canton, Texas, to expose the Ku Klux Klan; Wounded Knee with the 7th Cavalry; and to the island of Cuba to train revolutionaries. When he returned from Cuba, the Army assigned him to Fort Leavenworth to head up the training of new agents. He survived an assassination attempt, got married, and traveled to Germany as a cultural attaché to function as a spy for the U.S. government. After returning to the United States he was assigned to England to work with MI5 during WWI. Matt survived several attempts on his life and retired from the Army. An unanticipated opportunity arose from a phone call seeking the help of his unique skills. After finding a kidnapped child, he is contacted by several rich clients through the years to solve their unusual problems. The Shadow Soldier is the story of the early days of military intelligence and one man’s devotion to his country and family. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Robert Cunningham. Loving: Interracial Intimacy in America and the Threat to White Supremacy , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 554min
How interracial love and marriage changed American history and continues to alter the landscape of American politics. When Mildred and Richard Loving wed in 1958, they were ripped from their shared bed and taken to court. Their crime: miscegenation, punished by exile from their home state of Virginia. The resulting landmark decision of Loving v. Virginia ended bans on interracial marriage and remains a signature case - the first to use the words white supremacy to describe such racism. Drawing from the earliest chapters in US history, legal scholar Sheryll Cashin reveals the enduring legacy of America's original sin, tracing how we transformed from a country without an entrenched construction of race to a nation where one drop of nonwhite blood merited exclusion from full citizenship. In vivid detail she illustrates how the idea of whiteness was created by the planter class of yesterday and is reinforced by today's power-hungry dog whistlers to divide struggling whites and people of color, ensuring plutocracy and undermining the common good. Not just a hopeful treatise on the future of race relations in America, Loving challenges the notion that trickle-down progressive politics is our only hope for a more inclusive society. Accessible and sharp, Cashin reanimates the possibility of a future where interracial understanding serves as a catalyst of a social revolution ending not in artificial color blindness but in a culture where acceptance and difference are celebrated. ungekürzt. Rosetta Stone: History , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 7min
Learn about the Rosetta Stone with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series. In 196 BCE, priests of all the gods of Upper and Lower Egypt assembled at Memphis to celebrate the accession to the throne of the boy king Ptolemy V. He was already in the ninth year of his reign, but this was the first time that such a momentous gathering as this had taken place. The Council of Priests reviewed all the good works that Ptolemy had performed since acceding to the throne. They also decided that his services to Egypt merited extra honors to be paid to him in all major temples in Egypt. So, after this ceremony, the priests went about drafting a decree in which the good deeds of Ptolemy V and the extra honors to be paid to him were laid out. They wrote a final copy of this decree in three languages: Greek, Demotic (New Egyptian) and Hieroglyphs (Old Egyptian). This decree was engraved onto hard stone and was to be set up in every temple in Egypt. Thus, the Rosetta stone was created. Samurai Ethics in the Works of Kazuo Ishiguro (eBook, PDF)
Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2010 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 3,0, University of Würzburg (englische Literaturwissenschaft), language: English, abstract: Japanese-British writer Kazuo Ishiguro is not very fond of critics concentrating on Japanese elements in his works , however, his first short stories and the following two novels take place – even if, as it is the case with A Pale View of Hills, only partly– in Japan, making it hard not to concentrate on the writer´s apparent preoccupation with his Japanese heritage. His third novel, featuring an English setting and characters – an old mansion, a butler, and his employer, may have been viewed as an attempt to break away from this line of interpretation on the one hand, on the other, however, it was the one work which first merited a mention of the similarities between the butler´s philosophy of life and the samurai code of honour. To the author, though, his three novels, namely A Pale View of Hills, An Artist of the Floating World, and The Remains of the Day, are linked primarily by their characters, who all seem to be stuck in similar situations, having to face their past – in all three cases the past ultimately revolves around their choices before, during and in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War – and consequently struggle with their long-repressed feelings of regret and even shame...
