The Story of the Sixth Battalion Durham Light Infantry 1915-1918 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 127min
FNH Audio presents this unabridged reading of the heroic story of a territorial battalion mobilised and sent overseas into the bloodiest conflict the world has ever known. They fought with distinction at the Somme and Arras through some of the most terrible and wasteful of battles. In one three month period this battalion alone lost 1,200 men and sixty officers. That it survived until the end of the war was nothing short of a miracle. This history was written by the battalions Adjutant in 1919. A winner of the Military Cross for his actions in the combat, he relates in this work the fighting spirit of the battalion with a truthfulness that only comes with having been there. ungekürzt. Women, Sexuality and the Changing Social Order (eBook, ePUB)
This book, first published in 1991, examines the effect of government policies and social restrictions on the reproductive behaviour and family life of the women of Kenya, especially the Kikuyu people. Importation of techniques for social and behavioural regulation from the developed nations, the social restructuring that followed the colonial intervention, the Mau Mau uprisings and current widespread concern with AIDS have disrupted traditional influences on Kenyan reproductive behaviour and family life. In response to these changes, women mobilised into a movement comprised of small local women's groups scattered throughout Kenya that attempt to educate and influence both its members and government policy. The successes and failures of this movement offer important lessons for the rest of Africa and the developing world.- Shop: buecher

Economics of World War I (eBook, ePUB)
This unique volume offers a definitive new history of European economies at war from 1914 to 1918. It studies how European economies mobilised for war, how existing economic institutions stood up under the strain, how economic development influenced outcomes and how wartime experience influenced post-war economic growth. Leading international experts provide the first systematic comparison of economies at war between 1914 and 1918 based on the best available data for Britain, Germany, France, Russia, the USA, Italy, Turkey, Austria-Hungary and the Netherlands. The editors' overview draws some stark lessons about the role of economic development, the importance of markets and the damage done by nationalism and protectionism. A companion volume to the acclaimed The Economics of World War II, this is a major contribution to our understanding of total war.- Shop: buecher

Art, Power, and Patronage in the Principality of Epirus, 1204-1318 (eBook, ePUB)
The Principality of Epirus was a medieval Greek state established in the western part of the Balkans after the fall of Constantinople to the forces of the Fourth Crusade in 1204. The Epirote rulers from the Komnenos Doukas family claimed to be legitimate successors to the Byzantine imperial throne and, with the support of the high clergy and the aristocracy within their domain, carefully maintained their Byzantine identity under the conditions of exile. This book explores a corpus of Epirote architecture, frescoes, sculpture, and inscriptions from the early thirteenth to the early fourteenth century within a comparative and interdisciplinary framework, focusing on the nexus of art, patronage, and political ideology. Through an examination of a vast array of visual and textual sources, many of them understudied or hitherto unpublished, the book uncovers how the Epirote elite mobilised art and material culture to address the issues of succession and legitimacy, construct memory, reclaim Constantinople, and mediate encounters and exchanges with the Latin West. In doing so, this study offers a new perspective on Byzantine political and cultural history in the aftermath of the Fourth Crusade.- Shop: buecher
