Nietzsche's Beyond Good and Evil takes an in-depth look at the major truths of philosophy. However, the unique approach of adding poetry and commentary to these truths makes this work both more interesting and more dynamic than the typical philosophic discussion found in most modern philosophy books. In addition, Nietzche argues that most philosophies are centered on the philosopher's attempt to explain their own bias. The work offers insight to finding the truths not only about philosophy, but also about the philosophers who wrote these insights. The truths in this book, known as aphorisms, are linked together in a progressive way that allows the listener to slowly build a solid foundation of knowledge. After criticizing past philosophers, Neitzche explains the concept of a free spirit that is not confined by rules and principles. These future free thinkers the author mentions will hopefully follow all trails of thought until each is fully explored. Currently, philosophers rule out certain truths and ideas very quickly because these new ideas do not always coincide with the philosophers' traditional views. Nietzche uses this argument to point out that most religions suffer this same limited way of thinking, and he urges the use of philosophy as a tool to be utilized to its full extent rather than limited by a person's own reservations and opinions. ungekürzt. With the same passionate scholarship and analytical audacity he brought to the character of God, Jack Miles now approaches the literary and theological enigma of Jesus. In so doing, he tells the story of a broken promise - God’s ancient covenant with Israel - and of its strange, unlooked-for fulfillment. For, having abandoned his chosen people to an impending holocaust at the hands of their Roman conquerors. God, in the person of Jesus, chooses to die with them, in what is effectively an act of divine suicide. On the basis of this shocking argument, Miles compels us to reassess Christ’s entire life and teaching: His proclivity for the powerless and disgraced. His refusal to discriminate between friends and enemies. His transformation of defeat into a victory that redeems not just Israel but the entire world. Combining a close reading of the Gospels with a range of reference that includes Donne, Nietzche, and Elie Wiesel, Christ: A Crisis in the Life of God is a work of magnificent eloquence and imagination.  ungekürzt. Irvin D. Yalom has made a career of investigating the lives of others. In Becoming Myself, his long-awaited memoir, he turns his therapeutic eye on himself, delving into the relationships that shaped him and the groundbreaking work that made him famous. The first-generation child of immigrant Russian Jews, Yalom grew up in a lower-class neighbourhood in Washington, DC. Determined to escape its confines, he set his sights on becoming a doctor. An incredible ascent followed: we witness his start at Stanford Medical School amid the cultural upheavals of the 1960s, his turn to writing fiction as a means of furthering his exploration of the human psyche and his rise to international prominence. Yalom recounts his revolutionary work in group psychotherapy and how he became the foremost practitioner of existential psychotherapy, a method that draws on the wisdom of great thinkers over the ages. He reveals the inspiration for his many seminal books, including Love's Executioner and When Nietzche Wept, which meld psychology and philosophy to arrive at arresting new insights into the human condition. Interweaving the stories of his most memorable patients with personal tales of love and regret, Becoming Myself brings listeners close to Yalom's therapeutic technique, his writing process and his family life. ungekürzt.
