Mary Elizabeth Braddon (1835-1915) was a British Victorian era novelist famous for her sensationalist writing. 'Good Lady Ducayne' is a sensational tale of a young woman, Bella Rolleston, who secures a job as a paid companion to a very elderly and wealthy aristocratic lady who offers her a handsome salary, a winter travelling on the Italian Riviera and the Italian Lakes and very little to do. It all seems too good to be true. And when Bella learns that the old lady's previous two companions died under mysterious circumstances and she herself is becoming paler and sicker...it does seem as though something sinister is afoot. ungekürzt. When eighteen-year-old teleporter Ember Pierce wakes up in a Los Angeles hospital, she remembers only the basics: she's been trained by the government as a spy, she's sent on dangerous missions, and her last assignment - the one that landed her in the hospital - was a setup. Caden Hawthorne has spent the past ten months of his life grieving Ember's death. So when she shows up in his room like an apparition, he can't believe his eyes. But this Ember is different. Her hair is longer, her skin is paler, her gaze is haunted. She tells him what he's already begun to suspect: someone he trusted betrayed her. Now, uncertain who is friend and who is foe, Ember and Caden face the toughest mission of their lives - to stay together and survive, as they run from danger toward an unknown future. ungekürzt. 'AIDS art' is essentially an American invention. It has now manifested itself in a large number of different locations, but is almost invariably based on a model of artistic activity that evolved in the United States - one that was a response to the impact made by the epidemic on sections of American society. This means, among other things, that the best-known artworks connected with AIDS have nearly always had homosexual themes. The social and economic effect of heterosexually transmitted AIDS in Africa has, by contrast, played a distinctly minor role. AIDS art enterprises in Africa - for example, in South Africa with embroideries made by Zulu women; in Togo with t-shirts printed with messages addressed to young people - have inevitably seemed like paler copies of things that had already been done in the United States. They have also, much more than is the case with their American exemplars, seemed like bourgeois enterprises with no lasting social impact at any deep level. This was not so in the United States. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Christopher Selbie. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/144505/bk_acx0_144505_sample.mp3.
