A middle-aged woman, who likes to entertain, had recently lost her spouse and thought that her life was worthless and she was useless. She had been putting mementos and photos in a scrapbox and album and reminiscing, when she had the idea to throw a party asking each guest to bring something old and nostalgic - a hankie, piece of jewelry, small tool, souvenir, button, playbill, or other small item. The idea was that each guest would have to tell the story behind the item. Little did the woman know that some guests would have surprising secrets to which their memento was tied. A prior life, a lost child, an accident - many had sadness attached to their mementos, but kept them to tie them to reality. After listening to all the sad stories, the woman decides her life wasn't so bad after all, and that she had a purpose of being a friend to these people. ungekürzt. Language: English. In 1992, David C. Cassidy’s groundbreaking biography of Werner Heisenberg, Uncertainty, was published to resounding acclaim from scholars and critics. Michael Frayn, in the playbill of the Broadway production of Copenhagen, referred to it as one of his main sources and "the standard work in English". Richard Rhodes (The Making of the Atom Bomb) called it "the definitive biography of a great and tragic physicist", and the Los Angeles Times praised it as an "important book. Cassidy has sifted the record and brilliantly detailed Heisenberg’s actions." No book that has appeared since has rivaled Uncertainty, now out of print, for its depth and rich detail of the life, times, and science of this brilliant and controversial figure of 20th-century physics. Since the fall of the Soviet Union, long-suppressed information has emerged on Heisenberg’s role in the Nazi atomic bomb project. In Beyond Uncertainty, Cassidy interprets this and other previously unknown material within the context of his vast research and tackles the vexing questions of a scientist’s personal responsibility and guilt when serving an abhorrent military regime. ungekürzt. Even though resourceful caterer Faith Fairchild has called the sleepy Massachusetts village of Aleford home for most of her adult life, she isn't familiar with Havencrest, a privileged enclave, until the owner of Rowan House calls her about catering a weekend house party. While discussing the lavish party he's planning for his 70th birthday, Max Dane - the legendary Broadway musical producer/director - makes a startling confession: "I didn't hire you for your cooking skills, fine as they may be, but for your sleuthing ability. You see, one of the guests wants to kill me." Faith's only clue is an ominous birthday gift he received the week before - an empty casket sent anonymously containing a 20-year-old playbill from his last production, Heaven or Hell. Consequently, he has drawn his guest list for the party from its cast and crew, so Faith will have to keep one eye on the menu and the other on her host to prevent his birthday bash from becoming his final curtain. ungekürzt. On the eve of the Queen's coronation, DI Stephens and Max Mephisto uncover an anarchist plot and a ticking bomb at the same time as solving the murder of a man close to them - from the author of the best-selling Dr Ruth Galloway mysteries. Elizabeth II's coronation is looming, but the murder of their wartime commander, Colonel Cartwright, spoils the happy mood for DI Edgar Stephens and magician Max Mephisto. A playbill featuring another deceased comrade is found in Colonel Cartwright's possession, and a playing card, the ace of hearts: the blood card. The wartime connection and the suggestion of magic are enough for him to put Stephens and Mephisto on the case. Edgar's on-going investigation into the death of Brighton fortune-teller Madame Zabini is put on hold. Max is busy rehearsing for a spectacular Coronation Day variety show - and his television debut - so it's Edgar who is sent to New York, a land of plenty, worlds away from still-rationed England. He's on the trail of a small-town mesmerist who may provide the key, but someone else silences him first. It's Edgar's colleague, DS Emma Holmes who finds the clue, buried in the files of the Zabini case, that leads them to an anarchist group intent on providing an explosive finale to Coronation Day. Now it's up to Edgar, Max and Emma to foil the plot and find out who it is who's been dealing the cards.... ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Luke Thompson. Other highlights include 'I Won't Mind', 'Stars And The Moon', 'New Words', 'Ship In A Bottle', and new renditions of standards such as 'Meadowlark', 'Children Of The Wind', 'Why Did I Choose You' and the legendary title track. '...among the very best -- musically lovely and (rarer still) beautifully acted...The album overall is really wonderful, fine choices of songs, all well done.' - Josh Rubins, Composer/Lyricist (BROWNSTONE, ALL THE QUEEN'S MEN) 'Beautiful, sensitive...a wonderful recording.' - Jeff Blumenkrantz, Composer (THE OTHER FRANKLIN) 'Nice choice of songs. Campbell exhibits real talent with the material.' - Max Preeo, Editor, Show Music Magazine 'It only took hearing the first few phrases sung to let me know the songs are in good hands...Sandy's voice is instantly appealing...She has an open and sweet quality, but with intelligent phrasing that keeps her safely far away from over-sentimentality. It's no surprise to learn that she has experience in theater and cabaret. It shows...Campbell and G. Scott Lacy crystallize the emotional potential of rich songs like these. An encore would be very welcome.' - Talkin' Broadway. ABOUT THE ARTIST: Whether in cabaret or in concert, on stage or on disc, Sandy Campbell's warm and emotive soprano voice has become a celebrated favorite of Southern California audiences. Together with longtime musical director/accompanist G. Scott Lacy, she has developed and performed several acclaimed solo cabaret shows including The Stories Go On, an exploration of the story song in musical theatre, and And I'll Be There: Songs of Love and Friendship, which premiered at San Diego's North Coast Repertory Theatre in October 2003. Other cabaret appearances have included Sunday In The Park With Sondheim and Totally Tonys! For Outcast Productions and The Greatest Songs You've Never Heard. In October 2004, Sandy and Scott brought a program of their finest material to Schroeder's Club & Cabaret, San Diego's premiere cabaret venue. In June 2005, she returned to Schroeder's to celebrate the release of her first studio recording, CRAZY WORLD, produced and engineered by Eric Wilcox for TriTone Music Productions and released by Azahara Entertainment. In addition to her cabaret appearances, Sandy appeared as Anne Bronte in the concert version of the Steve Gunderson musical The Brontes, a production of the San Diego Ballet. She can also be heard on the concept recordings of several original works. As a theatre artist, Sandy has performed in a wide range of productions throughout Southern California and has built an impressive list of credits. In Summer 2006 she appeared in La Jolla Playhouse's world premier production of Zhivago, featuring the soaring melodies of The Secret Garden's Lucy Simon and directed by multiple Tony-winner Des McAnuff. Other notable roles include Cinderella in Into the Woods, Maria in West Side Story, Amalia in She Loves Me, Shelby in The Spitfire Grill, Rosa Bud in The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Aldonza in Man of La Mancha, Johanna in Sweeney Todd, Cordelia in William Finn's Falsettos and Abigail Adams in 1776. She has also been seen as Sarah in Guys and Dolls, Marian in The Music Man, Guenevere in Camelot, Anne in A Little Night Music, Hodel in Fiddler on the Roof and in the San Diego premiere of Jason Robert Brown's Songs For A New World. 'Campbell sings with irresistible clarity and power...' - Los Angeles Times 'Outstanding...a striking voice and presence...' - KPBS Radio 'Musical theatre heaven...there are echoes of Judy Collins in Campbell's soprano.' - San Diego Union 'Exceptional...Most remarkable...new levels of beauty and richness while filling her character with great tenderness, intelligence and emotion.' - San Diego Playbill.
