It’s an early autumn day like any other as Miles Avery drives his wife, Jacqueline, to the station. There’s a smattering of rain in the air, the traffic is in its usual snarl, and the radio’s churning out the latest news. Nothing remarkable crops up in conversation, nor do either of them appear anything other than their normal selves. At the station Miles draws up just past the taxi rank. Jacqueline gets out, takes an overnight bag from the back seat, then turns towards the platforms. This is the last anyone sees of her. Three weeks after her disappearance, Miles calls the police. Enquiries are made, but there is no evidence of her boarding a train, or even entering the station. Very soon the finger of suspicion starts to turn towards Miles, and as dark secrets from the past start to merge with those of the present, the great love he has been trying to protect is not only revealed but thrown into terrible jeopardy... ungekürzt. The Whistler was one of radio’s top mystery programs airing from May 16, 1942 until September 22, 1955. Sponsored by the Signal Oil Company, The Whistler (Joseph Kearns, Gale Gordon, and Bill Forman) was an ominous narrator who knew the killer’s every move even before they did. The stories followed an effective formula in which a person's criminal acts were typically undone by their own missteps. The Whistler often commenting directly upon the action in the manner of a Greek chorus, taunting the criminal from an omniscient perspective. One of the show’s trademarks was the ironic twist endings that helped serve as a payoff for the listener. Radio performers heard in this collection of 12 episodes include: Joseph Kearns, Bill Forman, Lou Merrill, Gerald Mohr, Hans Conreid, Marvin Miller and Frank Lovejoy. 8/22/42 “Death Has a Thirst” 8/29/42 “The Letter” 9/5/42 “House of Greed” 9/13/42 “Mirage” 9/20/42 “Fog” 9/27/42 “Jealousy” 10/4/42 “The Urge to Kill” 10/11/42 “Malice” 12/27/42 “The Double Cross” 1/3/43 “The Weakling” 6/26/43 “The Blank Wall” 8/28/49 “The Eager Pigeon”  ungekürzt. A brand new, fully dramatised remake of the lost archive drama Paul Temple and Steve, starring Crawford Logan and Gerda Stevenson From 1938 to 1968, crime novelist and detective Paul Temple and his Fleet Street journalist wife Steve solved case after case in one of BBC Radio’s most popular serials. Now the dapper duo return refreshed and reinvigorated to the airwaves, to investigate the activities of a shadowy and ruthless criminal mastermind in post-war London. Enlisted by Sir Graham Forbes of Scotland Yard to help track down the mysterious Dr Belasco, Paul and Steve find clues in cigarette lighters and bodies in shrubberies, dance the night away in louche Latin American night clubs, meet sinister manservants and suspicious foreigners, and have their lives threatened at every turn. Just as well Steve remembered to bring along her revolver as well as her ration book. This new production for BBC Radio 4 uses the original scripts, vintage sound effects and much of the incidental music from the missing 1947 production. As far as possible, it is a technical and stylistic replica of how that production might have sounded had its recording survived. Language: English. Narrator: Crawford Logan, Gerda Stevenson.
