The Warden - Chronicles of Barsetshire, Book 1 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 454min
The first novel in Trollope’s Chronicles of Barsetshire, The Warden is a compassionate portrait of the gentle, thoughtful warden and precentor of Barchester Cathedral, Mr. Septimus Harding. Loved and appreciated by all with whom he works, Harding lives an ordered, regular life in his protected religious environment. Then one day, a young reformer feels he has uncovered a mismanagement of funds and Harding is held to blame. The accusation comes as a shock not only to Harding himself but also to the cathedral community. It then comes to wider notice when the cause is taken up by a national newspaper. Trollope’s insight into character, his abundant imagination, and his sheer narrative skill are at their peak in The Warden. Barchester Towers: Penguin English Library, Hörbuch, Digital, 337min
Penguin Classics presents Anthony Trollope’s Barchester Towers, adapted for listening and now available as a digital audiobook as part of the Penguin English Library series. The text is expertly read by the actor David Timson. "What to come here a stranger, a young, unknown, and unfriended stranger, and tell us, in the name of the bishop his master, that we are ignorant of our duties, old-fashioned, and useless!" Trollope's comic masterpiece of plotting and backstabbing opens as the Bishop of Barchester lies on his deathbed. Soon a pitched battle breaks out over who will take power, involving, among others, the zealous reformer Dr Proudie, his fiendish wife, and the unctuous schemer Obadiah Slope. Barchester Towers is the second (as well as the most loved) book in Trollope’s Chronicles of Barsetshire series, which captures 19th century provincial England with wit, worldly wisdom, and an unparalleled gift for characterization. Part of a series of vintage recordings taken from the Penguin archives, the Penguin English Library series offers affordable, collectable, quality productions that are perfect for on-the-go listening. The Warden , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 582min
Anthony Trollope’s The Warden was the first of Trollope’s hugely successful Barchester Chronicles, appearing in 1855 and reversing the rather unfortunate sales of his previous three novels. It concerns the story of Mr. Septimus Harding, Warden of Hiram's Hospital almshouses and Precentor of Barchester Cathedral. The discrepancy between the living of the clerics and the living of the bedesmen in the almshouses becomes a cause célébre, with Barchester and, in particular, Mr. Harding becoming the centre of a whipped up storm in the national newspaper The Jupiter. At the time when Trollope was writing The Warden, several financial scandals had rocked the Church of England, and he drew on one in particular for the background to his story. The Reverend Francis North had been appointed as Master of the Hospital of St Cross in Winchester, and some serious discrepancies had emerged between the vast revenues of the hospital and the rather less great work of the Master. The Times was very closely involved in the publicising of the St Cross story and is very clearly the model for The Jupiter. However, when he was gently teased by The Times for his very personal attack on the editor of the paper, which it claimed to see thinly disguised in the character of Tom Towers, Trollope denied that any personal attack was involved, saying that he’d been in Ireland for the whole of the St Cross scandal and was totally unaware of any particular characters involved. The Warden is a totally engrossing 'history of an old man’s conscience', as Henry James described it. Trollope leads us further and further into the life of Septimus Harding, and we grow more and more fond of him and await with increasing dread the inevitable catastrophe. ungekürzt. Dr Thorne: Chronicles of Barsetshire, Book 3 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 1367min
Dr Thorne, the third novel in Anthony Trollope's Chronicles of Barsetshire, sees Trollope steer away from the clergy and the church politics of The Warden and Barchester Towers and move towards the scandals and prejudice of the upper tiers of Victorian era aristocracies. It tells the tale of Frank Gresham and Mary Thorne, a couple intent on marriage despite their conflicting social backgrounds. Frank is engaged in a fierce battle with his family as his mother vehemently opposes the marriage and pushes him to marry a wealthy heiress; however, Frank shuns her attempts and is determined to accept Mary on her own terms. Dr Thorne contains all of Trollope’s beloved prose: always solicitous, gentle and kind to his audience, Trollope never shies away from poking fun at the pretentions of some of his characters as he peppers the narrative with wonderfully witty observations that will leave you smiling. Orley Farm (Dramatised), Hörbuch, Digital, 171min
A BBC Radio 4 full-cast dramatisation by Martyn Wade of Anthony Trollope’s classic novel. Orley Farm, described as a “[B]rilliantly choreographed legal thriller” (Mail on Sunday), centres on the pathos of the main character, Lady Mason. Youthful marriage choices, middle-aged marital crisis, love and loss revolve around the legal action and the complex portrayal of Lady Mason, who is both sympathetic and wily. The novel proposes a standard of morality higher than that embodied in the practice of an English court of law. With its concern for social issues and its extensive coverage of middle-class and landed life, Orley Farm is a novel that demands attention in the rich field of 19th century fiction. Trollope wrote in his autobiography that his friends considered this "the best I have written". With Tim Pigott-Smith as Anthony Trollope and Samantha Bond as Lady Mason, this production also stars Ronald Pickup, Dan Stevens, Amanda Root, Jonathan Christie, and Lydia Leonard. Doctor Thorne , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 1251min
Exclusively from Audible Doctor Thorne is the third audiobook in Anthony Trollope's series known as the Chronicles of Barsetshire. Long regarded as one of Trollope's greatest works, it is a complex story of love, greed and illegitimacy. Set in fictional Barsetshire, it concerns the romantic challenges facing Doctor Thorne's penniless niece, Mary, and Frank Gresham, the only son of the impoverished squire of Greshambury. Mary falls in love with Frank but he is constrained by the need to marry well to restore the family fortunes and Greshambury estate. Despite the promptings of his family to consider a Miss Dunstable, heiress to a fortune, Frank's affections persist, and the humane Doctor Thorne, as Mary's protector, must confront the prejudices of the mid-Victorian society. Timothy West's narration enhances all the wit and satire that one expects from Trollope. Full of snobbery and hypocrisy, it is a social comedy full of some of Trollope's most brilliant characters. Barchester Towers , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 1146min
Exclusively from Audible Barchester Towers is the second of six in the series known as Chronicles of Barsetshire. Narrator Timothy West brings life to the story, begun in The Warden, of Mr. Harding and his daughter Eleanor. It chronicles the struggle for control of the English diocese of Barchester after one Bishop dies and a new one is selected. The rather incompetent new Bishop, Dr. Proudie, led by his formidable wife, and ambitious chaplain, Mr. Slope, begin to create turmoil with their desire to shake up the church establishment in Barchester with new policies and practices. However, the established clergy of Barchester, led by Archdeacon Grantly, the son of the previous Bishop, are equally determined to keep things just as they've always been. Archdeacon Grantly declares 'War, war, internecine war!' on Bishop Proudie, but who will win the battle between the archdeacon, the bishop, Mr. Slope, and Mrs. Proudie? The Guardian included Barchester Towers in its list of '1000 novels everyone must read'. Full of humour and extraordinary characters, it is no wonder it continues to be Trollope's best-loved work. A Necessary Luxury: Tea in Victorian England , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 804min
Tea-drinking in Victorian England was a pervasive activity that, when seen through the lens of a century’s perspective, presents a unique overview of Victorian culture. Tea was a necessity and a luxury; it was seen as masculine as well as feminine; it symbolized the exotic and the domestic; and it represented both moderation and excess.Tea was flexible enough to accommodate and to mark subtle differences in social status, to mediate these differences between individuals, and to serve as a shared cultural symbol within England. In A Necessary Luxury: Tea in Victorian England, Julie E. Fromer analyzes tea histories, advertisements, and nine Victorian novels, including Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Wuthering Heights, and Portrait of a Lady.Fromer demonstrates how tea functions within the literature as an arbiter of taste and middle-class respectability, aiding in the determination of class status and moral position. She reveals the way in which social identity and character are inextricably connected in Victorian ideology as seen through the ritual of tea.Drawing from the fields of literary studies, cultural studies, history, and anthropology, A Necessary Luxury offers in-depth analysis of both visual and textual representations of the commodity and the ritual that was tea in 19th-century England. The book is published by Ohio University Press. The audiobook is published by University Press Audiobooks.“This book is a genuine tour de force.” (Deborah Denenholz Morse, author of Women in Trollope’s Palliser Novels)“Anyone who opens Julie Fromer's absorbing book may never read a Victorian novel in quite the same way again.” (Mansfield News Journal)“A well-researched history of the development of a habit inextricably woven into England’s national identity.” (Dickens Quarterly) ungekürzt.
