Lean in Unionized Environment , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 132min
Lean is designed to reduce the seven "deadly forms of waste": defects, overproduction, over processing, wasted motion, inventory (work in process), transport/handling, and waiting. Addressing any, or all, of these can help operations run more efficiently and therefore be more competitive, which is in the long-term best interest of job security. But, in my experience as a former union member, internal change agent, and currently as an organizational change consultant, Lean implementation in union environments can be tricky. ungekürzt. Nothin' But Blue Skies: The Heyday, Hard Times and Hopes of America's Industrial Heartland , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 745min
The Upper Midwest and Great Lakes region became the "arsenal of democracy" - the greatest manufacturing center in the world-in the years during and after World War II, thanks to natural advantages and a welcoming culture. Decades of unprecedented prosperity followed, memorably punctuated by riots, strikes, burning rivers, and oil embargoes. A vibrant, quintessentially American character bloomed in the region's cities, suburbs, and backwaters. But the innovation and industry that defined the Rust Belt also helped to hasten its demise. An air conditioner invented in Upstate New York transformed the South from a sweaty backwoods to a non-unionized industrial competitor. Japan and Germany recovered from their defeat to build fuel-efficient cars in the stagnant 1970s. The tentpole factories that paid workers so well also filled the air with soot, and poisoned waters and soil. The jobs drifted elsewhere, and many of the people soon followed suit. Nothin' but Blue Skies tells the story of how the country's industrial heartland grew, boomed, bottomed, and hopes to be reborn. Through a propulsive blend of storytelling and reportage, celebrated writer Edward McClelland delivers the rise, fall, and revival of the Rust Belt and its people. ungekürzt. Language: English. In Bed with Susie Bright 583: Private Manning Is a Woman - Do You Have a Problem with That?, Hörbuch, Digital, 33min, (USK 18)
Susie begins today's show with a look at why Pfc Bradley Manning's announcement that "I am a female" and that she will seek hormone replacement therapy is not so surprising. After being sentenced to 35 years in prison for leaking government files, Manning made the not-so-shocking announcement about her transition and new name: Chelsea. Susie points out that many people are taking hormones and asks what all the uproar is over Manning requesting some while in prison. Transgendering has been around, and in the public's eye, for some time. Really, what's all the fuss? Next, the legendary Lusty Lady peep show has closed. It began in the 1970s in Seattle, and another LL show soon opened in San Francisco. This uniquely worker-owned, unionized sex shop featured exotic dancers and offered customers private pleasure booths from which they could watch and talk to the "Lusties". Oh, Susie has so many memories of this institution. She recalls many fun stories and a few secrets.Lastly, Susie previews a new, sexy audiobook from Audible that is a must listen. This book is her erotic pick of the year! It's Bending: Dirty Kinky Stories About Pain, Power, Religion, Unicorns & More by Greta Christina. Susie talks about what makes this book so hot. The Studebakers: The History of the Studebaker Family and Their Classic Cars , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 116min
“The automobile has come to stay. But when a man has no business, it is a rather expensive luxury, and I would advise no man, be he farmer or merchant, to buy one until he has sufficient income to keep it up. A horse and buggy will afford a great deal of enjoyment…” (John M. Studebaker)Every year, thousands of automobile enthusiasts from different states near and far – and at times, flying in from other countries – flock to their nearest Studebaker car show, hosted by a local chapter of the Studebaker Driver's Club, without fail. Car fanatics and avid collectors alike congregate at these wholesome, family-friendly events to admire and pay homage to the long-lived company's exquisite collection of cars and trucks in both used and mint conditions, among which include: the 1954 Studebaker Champion, a sleek model available in electric blue and tangerine orange, equipped with three-passenger benches and their trademark flat-head straight-six engine rated at 85 hp and 138-lbs of torque; the 1963 Studebaker Avanti, a personal luxury coupe, available in colors such as pewter gray, royal red, and midnight black, kitted out with black vinyl bucket seats; the 1927 Studebaker Dictator, a classic, rear-wheel-drive, four-door sedan with a hardtop roof; and many other timeless masterpieces. In a nutshell, the Studebaker Corporation was, to many, the embodiment of classic American culture and values. It was a distinctly unionized and family-oriented business, its cars and wares built by generations of fathers and sons, and throughout its lengthy history, churned out some 4.2 million vehicles, on top of the 2 million horse-drawn carriages manufactured during its early years. To this day, one can still see the imprints and vestiges left behind by the Studebaker legacy across its hometown of South Bend, Indiana. There is, for instance, the Studebaker Plaza, situated on the corner of Michigan Street and Jefferson Boulevard, which features an oversized chessboar ungekürzt. Language: English. Femininity in Flight: A History of Flight Attendants , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 563min
In her new chic outfit, she looks like anything but a stewardess working. But work she does. Hard, too. And you hardly know it. So read the text of a 1969 newspaper advertisement for Delta Airlines featuring a picture of a brightly smiling blond stewardess striding confidently down the aisle of an airplane cabin to deliver a meal. From the moment the first stewardesses took flight in 1930, flight attendants became glamorous icons of femininity. For decades, airlines hired only young, attractive, unmarried white women. They marketed passenger service aloft as an essentially feminine exercise in exuding charm, looking fabulous, and providing comfort. The actual work that flight attendants did - ensuring passenger safety, assuaging fears, serving food and drinks, all while conforming to airlines' strict rules about appearance - was supposed to appear effortless; the better that stewardesses performed by airline standards, the more hidden were their skills and labor. Yet today, flight attendants are acknowledged safety experts; they have their own unions. Gone are the no-marriage rules, the mandates to retire by thirty-two. In Femininity in Flight, Kathleen M. Barry tells the history of flight attendants, tracing the evolution of their glamorized image as ideal women and their activism as trade unionists and feminists. Barry argues that largely because their glamour obscured their labor, flight attendants unionized in the late 1940s and 1950s to demand recognition and respect as workers and self-styled professionals. In the 1960s and 1970s, flight attendants were one of the first groups to take advantage of new laws prohibiting sex discrimination. Their challenges to airlines' restrictive employment policies and exploitive marketing practices (involving skimpy uniforms and provocative slogans such as "fly me") made them high-profile critics of the cultural mystification and economic devaluing of "women's work." Barry combines atte ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Caroline Miller. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/008402/bk_acx0_008402_sample.mp3.
