Ottis Toole, born at the bottom of the gene pool, retarded and illiterate, had been out of control since early childhood. A severely drug-dependent individual as well as an arsonist, murderer, rapist, and cannibal, he was unsafe under any conditions outside of a secure prison, and perhaps unsafe there. To him, life itself was so unmeaning, and the distinction between living and dead people so blurred, that killing another human being was no more than swatting an annoying fly. Between 1976 and 1982, together with his serial killer buddy, Henry Lee Lucas, Ottis Toole was reported to have committed over 300 murders. However, the discrediting of the case against his partner in crime, Henry Lee Lucas, for crimes in which Toole had offered collaborating statements created doubts as to whether either was a genuine serial killer or both merely compliant interviewees who police used to clear unsolved murders from the books. Now, in Raging Cannibal, a screenplay for film by author Brian Lee Tucker, offers up a totally new glimpse into the life of Ottis Toole, one never shown before, the eyewitness accounts, personal testimony, and never-before-uncovered evidence providing an in-depth look into one of the most notorious serial killers that ever lived, who was dubbed the nick name, the "Cannibal Kid". ungekürzt. Featuring conversations with more than 20 leading politicians, writers, artists, and activists, this book is expert interviewer Marianne Schnall's examination of why America has not yet elected a female president - and how this might change. Prompted by a question from her eight-year-old daughter during the 2008 election of Barack Obama - "why haven't we ever had a woman president?" - Marianne Schnall set out on a journey to find the answer. A widely published writer, author, and interviewer, and the executive director of Feminist.com, Schnall began looking at the issues from various angles and perspectives, gathering viewpoints from influential people from all sectors. What Will It Take to Make a Woman President? features interviews with politicians, public officials, thought leaders, writers, artists, and activists in an attempt to uncover the obstacles that have held women back and what needs to change in order to elect a woman into the White House. With insights and personal anecdotes from Sheryl Sandberg, Maya Angelou, Gloria Steinem, Nancy Pelosi, Nicholas Kristof, Melissa Etheridge, and many more, this book addresses timely, provocative issues involving women, politics, and power. With a broader goal of encouraging women and girls to be leaders in their lives, their communities, and the larger world, Schnall and her interviewees explore the changing paradigms occurring in politics and in our culture with the hope of moving toward meaningful and effective solutions - and a world where a woman can be president. ungekürzt. Operation Chaos is an untold Cold War story: how the CIA tried to infiltrate a radical group of US military deserters, an audiobook that leads from a bizarre political cult to the heart of the Washington establishment  Stockholm, 1968. A thousand American deserters and draft resisters are arriving to escape the war in Vietnam. They’re young, they’re radical, and they want to start a revolution. Some of them even want to take the fight to America.  The Swedes treat them like pop stars - but the CIA is determined to stop all that. It’s a job for the deep-cover men of Operation Chaos and their allies - agents who know how to infiltrate organizations and destroy them from inside. Within months the GIs have turned their fire on one another. Then the interrogations begin - to discover who among them has been brainwashed, Manchurian Candidate-style, to assassinate their leaders.  When Matthew Sweet began investigating this story, he thought the madness was over. He was wrong. Instead, he became the confidant of an eccentric and traumatized group of survivors - each with his own theory about the traitors in their midst. All Sweet has to do is find out the truth. And stay sane. Which may be difficult when one of his interviewees accuses him of being a CIA agent and another suspects that he’s part of a secret plot by the British royal family to start World War III. By that time he’s deep in the labyrinth of truths and half-truths, wondering where reality ends and delusion begins. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Steve West. We have all been in situations where we just didn't believe what the other person was saying. We knew that the person in front of us was lying. We knew that he just did not know what he was talking about. We knew that something was just not right about this person or with what he was saying. This is where we often pick nonverbal signals and use them to gain a more accurate picture of the situation or the individual, which wouldn't be possible if we were completely reliant on verbal communication. This is what body language is all about. Body language constitutes about 50 percent of our overall communication. This nonverbal communication is responsible for our success in interviews, presentations, and all our social interactions. Furthermore, if we are adept at reading the body language of our clients, interviewees, or any other person we are interacting with, we can easily modify our approach to the situation to achieve more success. There is often a difference between the words that people speak and their nonverbal communication. So it pays to learn about body language. Just by being more aware of certain signs and signals, we can understand people in a better manner and communicate in a more effective way. In this guide we will learn more about body language, how we can use it to effectively communicate with others, and how we can read the nonverbal signals of others to make more informed decisions based on good judgment. ungekürzt. When the 1st Marine Division began its invasion of Peleliu in September 1944, the operation in the South Pacific was to take but four days. In fact, capturing this small coral island in the Palaus with its strategic airstrip took two months and involved some of the bloodiest fighting of the Second World War in the Pacific. Rather than the easy conquest they were led to expect, the Marines who landed on Peleliu faced a war of attrition from the island's Japanese defenders, who had dug tunnels and fortified the island's rugged terrain. When the Marines' advance stalled after a week of heavy casualties, the "Wildcats" of the 81st Infantry Division were called in, at first as support. Eventually, the 1st Marines Division was evacuated and the 81st Infantry secured the island. Now Bobby C. Blair and John Peter DeCioccio tell the story of this campaign through the eyes of the 81st Infantry to offer a revised assessment. Previous accounts of the battle have focused on the 1st Marines, all but ignoring the 81st Infantry Division's contributions. Victory at Peleliu demonstrates that without the army's help, the marines could not have succeeded on Peleliu. Blair and DeCioccio have mined the 81st Division's unit records and interviewed scores of veteran participants. The new data they offer challenges the orthodox view that the 81st Infantry merely mopped up an already broken enemy. Allowing their interviewees to tell much of the story, the authors also give a human face to a brutal battle. The book is published by University of Oklahoma Press. ungekürzt. Language: English. You might say I'm set in my airways. I'm one of those lucky people whose professional and private lives blend exactly." Alan Whicker, 2007 This sumptuous book, to accompany the major BBC TV series of the same name, is a glorious celebration of 50 years in front of the camera. For as long as most can remember, Whicker has roamed far and wide in search of the eccentric, the ludicrous, and the socially-revealing aspects of everyday life as lived by some of the more colourful of the world's inhabitants. Since the late 1950s, when the long-running Whicker's World documentary was first screened, he has probed and dissected the often secretive and unobserved worlds of the rich and famous, rooting out the most implausible and sometimes ridiculous characters after gaining admittance to the places where they conduct their leisure hours. The great man's legacy contains a number of genuine TV firsts. As well as landmark interviews with figures as diverse as Papa Doc, Paul Getty, and the Sultan of Brunei, he was a pioneer, covering subjects like plastic surgery, gay weddings, polygamy, swinging, and gun-toting cops, fly-on-the-wall style, for British screens long before anyone else. This wonderful new book is the end product of a very personal journey. Whicker retraces his steps, catching up with some past interviewees and reflecting on how the world has changed - for good and bad - over the passing of time. Journey of a Lifetime is lyrical, uplifting, and peppered with our favourite globetrotter's brand of subtle satire. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Alan Whicker. This eye-opening look at the abortion process prior to the Supreme Court’s landmark Roe v. Wade decision of 1973 is now more relevant than ever, with a new introduction by the author revisiting history that is still salient half a century later. In the years before Roe v. Wade, women seeking to end their unwanted pregnancies had limited options - many of them dangerous, even potentially fatal, and nearly all of them illegal. This groundbreaking work by sociologist Nancy Howell Lee, first published in 1969, takes an intimate look at the entire abortion process - from the initial decision to terminate a pregnancy through the procedure itself and the aftermath - providing an incomparable view of what is still one of the most controversial and divisive issues in America. Based on interviews with 114 women who had illegal abortions, Howell Lee’s book reveals how the abortions were procured and paid for, and looks at the lasting effects the experience had on the participants. The interviewees were open and honest about what influenced their decisions, how they conducted their search for someone to perform the procedure, and the physical and emotional aftereffects. With many state governments across America currently passing new legislation that restricts and, in many cases, effectively bans abortion, an eventual return to the pre-Roe days threatens the well-being of millions of women, making Nancy Howell Lee’s pioneering study more relevant than ever. It is a must-listen for pro-choice and pro-life adherents alike. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Claire Slemmer. Field research, the collection of information outside a lab or workplace setting, requires skills and knowledge not typically taught in the classroom. Fieldwork demands exploratory inquisitiveness, empathy to encourage interviewees to trust the researcher, and sufficient aptitude to work professionally and return home safely. The Field Researcher's Handbook provides a practical guide to planning and executing fieldwork and presenting the results. Based on his experience conducting field research in more than fifty countries and teaching others a holistic approach to field research, David J. Danelo introduces the skills new researchers will need in the field, including anthropology, travel logistics planning, body language recognition, interview preparation, storytelling, network development, and situational awareness. His time as a combat veteran in the US Marine Corps further enhances his knowledge of how to be observant and operate safely in any environment. Danelo also discusses ethical considerations and how to recognize personal biases. This handbook is intended for researchers in a variety of academic disciplines but also for government, think-tank, and private-sector researchers. The book is published by Georgetown University Press."David Danelo has produced an insightful, step-by-step guide to professional fieldwork that artfully underscores the importance of the craft." (Tracy Dahlby, University of Texas at Austin)"This book empowers readers with a clear path forward in their pursuit of knowledge." (Patrick Van Horne, Co-author of Left of Bang: How the Marine Corps' Combat Hunter Program Can Save Your Life)"David Danelo is an extraordinary field researcher who has lived in the world about which he writes so eloquently. I strongly endorse his approach and research." (James Stavridis, USN (Ret.), former NATO Supreme Allied Commander) ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Mike Bender.
