Seth Row , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 313min
Seth’s show Seth Row has made his name a household word with his weekly radio, internet, and TV specials interviewing inmates on death row before their executions. Seth is often the last person to really speak with the inmates before they exit this world and the women in his life articulate that hanging out near the abyss of death rubs off on him and ghosts of his interviewees may follow him home. Could be possible, he supposed. Seth doesn’t focus on the heinous acts that placed these corrupted humans on death row, but their backstories. The men behind the crimes…their life, loves, interests, regrets, beliefs about life after death. He humanizes the villains. Not in an attempt to exonerate or give them fame, but to pull back the outer layer and see what makes them tick. His favorite stories were always those where each character is multifaceted…the heroes not always all good and the antagonists not all bad. Mankind is constantly battling the natural-man inside themselves and Seth believes there is good and bad in every person. It just depends on the wolf they decide to feed. He is the consummate professional interviewer, until he meets the most unlikely death row inmate and things become a bit more personal for him. Each chapter opens with interesting, true facts about death row (but no political stance is taken). The story is filled with colorful inmates, varied love interests, a long-lost father who turns out to be an actual Father, and a young philosophical death row inmate that ends up connected to Seth on another level. Seth ultimately has to decide if he can host the live execution of someone he cares about and believes is innocent. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Michael Murphy. The Heart of Religion: Spiritual Empowerment Benevolence and the Experience of God's Love , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 813min
Beneath our culture's obsession with wealth and power, status and celebrity, millions of Americans are quietly engaged in a deeply religious struggle to free themselves from petty selfishness and to embrace a life of benevolence and compassion. Drawing on an extensive random survey of 1,200 men and women across the United States, Matthew Lee, Margaret Poloma, and Stephen Post here shed new light on how Americans wake up to the reality of divine love and how that transformative experience expresses itself in concrete acts of benevolence. The authors find that the vast majority of Americans (eight out of ten) report that they have felt God's love increasing their compassion for others, one of many important revelations uncovered by the survey. In order to more fully flesh out the meaning of the survey's results, the authors also conducted 120 in-depth interviews with Christian women and men from all walks of life and from across the country who are engaged in benevolent service. Their stories offer compelling examples of how receiving God's love, loving God, and expressing this love to others has made a difference in the world and given their lives deeper significance. As a result, some provide community service, others strive for social justice, still others seek to redefine religion and the meaning of "church" in America. Interviewees who may have grown up with judgmental images of God tended to trade them in for a loving and accepting God more consistent with their own emotionally powerful personal experiences. The Five Secrets You Must Discover Before You Die , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 302min
Imagine for a moment that you are about to take a foreign vacation to an exotic destination. You have saved your entire life to travel there. It is a destination with almost unlimited choices of how to spend your time and you know you will not have enough time to explore every opportunity. You are fairly certain that you will never get to take a second trip to this destination; this will be your one opportunity. Now imagine that someone informs you that there are several people in your neighborhood who have been to that country, explored every corner. Some of them enjoyed the journey and have few regrets, but others wish they could take the trip again knowing what they know now. Would you not invite them over for dinner, ask them to bring their photographs, listen to their stories, and hear their advice? This is precisely the journey explored in this book. Dr. John Izzo and his colleagues interviewed over 200 people over the age of 60 (up to 106 years of age) who were identified by others as having lived happy lives and as having found purpose and contentment. The interviewees ranged from aboriginal elders to town barbers, from Holocaust survivors to former CEOs. In these interviews, each person was asked to reflect back on his or her life to identify the sources of happiness and meaning as well as lessons learned, regrets, major crossroads, and what did not contribute to meaning in their lives. Based on these interviews, and Dr. Izzo’s 20 years experience helping people find more spirit and purpose, the book explores the secrets to finding contentment, happiness, and purpose. Using a powerful narrative voice, Dr. Izzo helps the listener understand the common themes from the lives of those interviewed, the commonality of what really matters in their lives, and especially how to put this wisdom into practice. ungekürzt. Reluctant Warriors , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 662min
Here are elite soldiers, kibbutz-born, battle-bred. Their stories reveal their minds and souls, and what has tempered and annealed their hearts. They are citizen soldiers all - many officers - who refused career military appointments and returned to civilian life, as much as one can be a civilian in Israel. Descendants of Isaac who, like modern-day Ishmaels, seek peace while pursuing the Leviathan of war. Or are pursued by it. They also search for inner peace. These men and this author were transformed by the Second Intifada over a four- year period. I began this book in an era of hope following Oslo. In the political shambles after President Clinton's desperate and failed Taba diplomacy, it grew in complexity. I write today at the re-dawn of dimmed hope following Saddam Hussein's & Kaddafi's downfall, ; Arafat's death, but also Lebanon's Hariri murder. Much has changed since then. A psychoanalyst by profession, five years ago I completed a book about American youth, their journeys, successes and failures, from birth through 30. All but one of the 76 interviewees had navigated the inner turmoil of adolescence and young adulthood via the relatively pacific waters of college. In 1999, I met an Israeli graduate student at a Hanukah party who asked me what I had learned about Americans. He listened closely, then quietly remarked how different it was to become a young man in the Israeli army. To understand Israel, he continued, one must understand its army. And so, a year later, in the fall of 2000, I decided at least to try to understand that society. Before I left, I returned to a book - Children of the Dream - written by Bruno Bettelheim, one of my teachers. It is frequently misquoted, misunderstood. Bettelheim recounts the extraordinary job the kibbutzim do in communal rearing of children. Reluctant Warriors follows these children from late adolescence into young adulthood. Let us follow them together. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Bob Sterry. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/094175/bk_acx0_094175_sample.mp3. Vagina: A New Biography , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 800min
An astonishing work of cutting-edge science and cultural history that radically reframes how we understand the vagina - and consequently, how we understand women - from one of our most respected cultural critics and thinkers, Naomi Wolf, author of the modern classic The Beauty Myth. When an unexpected medical crisis sends Naomi Wolf on a deeply personal journey to tease out the intersections between sexuality and creativity, she discovers, much to her own astonishment, an increasing body of scientific evidence that suggests that the vagina is not merely flesh, but an intrinsic component of the female brain - and thus has a fundamental connection to female consciousness itself. Utterly enthralling and totally fascinating, Vagina: A New Biography draws on this set of insights about "the mind-vagina connection" to reveal new information about what women really need, and considers what a sexual relationship - and a relationship to the self - transformed by these insights could look like. Exhilarating and groundbreaking, Vagina: A New Biography combines rigorous science, explained for lay listeners, with cultural history and deeply personal considerations of the role of female desire in female identity, creativity, and confidence, from interviewees of all walks of life. Heralded by Publishers Weekly as one of the best science books of the year, it is a provocative and deeply engaging book that elucidates the ties between a woman's experience of her vagina and her sense of self; her impulses, dreams, and courage; and her role in love and in society in completely new and revelatory ways sure to provoke impassioned conversation. A brilliant and nuanced synthesis of physiology, history, and cultural criticism, Vagina: A New Biography explores the physical, political, and spiritual implications of this startling series of new scientific breakthroughs for women and for society as a whole, from a writer wh ungekürzt.
